The thought of the image is based on the following lyrics parts: "I used to rule the world", and then the contradiction between two verses in the song - "I know Saint Peter won't call my name", and, later, "I know Saint Peter will call my name". I envisage a person, at the deciding moment of their life, being unsure whether they are allowed to enter Heaven or not - and the hesitation does not come from Saint Peter or God, it comes from the person themselves clinging to the world that they thought they owned - but should leave behind, otherwise entry to Heaven will indeed be closed for them. So the person, almost faceless, is on the doorstep of Heaven, trying to drag the Earth through - but it simply doesn't fit. What needs to be done is drop it - and move on to the better world. But such a choice is very difficult to make! PS I will really appreciate any helpful feedback on this - about the idea, composition, anatomy (far from being correct), lighting, colour choices and the like. Comments
I am impressed. You managed to capture the underlying anatomy of the figure well, even pushing the right elements like the tendons in the left hand. The exaggerated perspective creates a sense of immense scale which suits the piece nicely. The foreshortening of the left arm is well accomplished and is even suited to fit the perspective employed, and finally the face being obscured by the light takes away the importance of the personal identity of the figure and makes us more intimate with the actual image itself.
I think the color work is good, but if I could add to it, I would increase the intensity of the ripples in the water on the globe. It looks very static, as if the figure is literally motionless, and his pose and silhouette suggest movement, lots of it. Perhaps even a splash would have made this piece far more dramatic than it already is. Still, I think it is a great success and that you've definitely accomplished something. Great work! Thank you very much for taking the time and reviewing the drawing with such attention! I like your idea about the splash - it would indeed make everything more dynamic, and it is really needed. I will think about it and perhaps go back to the image somewhat later (need to sleep now, after several days of trying to get this done in time
Thanks again for your kind words and helpful critique. You are right, the arms are not right. Thank you for noticing this. I could call it an exaggerated perspective (but I won't
Regarding the attention to this drawing - I can't complain, several views and favs in the three days since it was posted, much higher than what I usually get. I wish there was more critique, though. Most people add it to their favs silently. Thank you for the kind words and I am really glad you enjoyed it - I tried to draw from my heart. Also, thank you for your bold signature! It is refreshing. i usually fave and run when i find something nice but
this time i thought, i just had to say something, since u requested advanced critique i think u deserve more. it's one of deviant art's biggest problems. didn't u notice, that fanart and ordinary photos get waaay to much attention? especially this one guy ...his name was... i think something with muchlikefalling. welcome I think it is like a snowball - once you have several people "watching" you, then it is much easier to get more. Almost like in real life. But I am still very thankful even for the little critique that I do get - it is the only way to learn, by practicing and finding out what can be improved.
By the way, I noticed the other day that it is possible to put a "No critique please" sign for comments, but still allow comments! That seems very strange to me, why make the art public, and then not want to hear opinions? In any case, thank you for stopping by and dropping a few useful thoughts I think I'm not able to make an advance critic 'cause I know nothing about anatomy... I can only say that I found it a great work, with a very good composition and, overall, a very stunning and suggestive light, which adds high drama to the scene. And the position of the man makes you really feel on yourself his desperation and internal conflict. I think this is a work which speak to the soul.
